This summer in Espanola, NM, we had our first ever Shabad Guru Course in person, live over 3 days. The course was held in the mountains near the Mother Ashram, just before Summer Solstice.
The course was a great mix of people new to this path as well as people who wanted to re-inspire their connection after many years of practice.
Each person wanted to connect deeply with the Guru, so we invoked this prayer and started our journey. On the first day, GuruKirin Kaur covered the first steps of Why Do We Have a Guru? and What Makes the Shabad Guru unique? There were fun stories from the Siri Singh Sahib and engaging videos of his lectures to watch.
We went through a journey of experiencing the Shabad Guru through the Naad, going through the steps of Japa, to build our spiritual heat and burn our karma, Bhajan where we opened our heart and then finished the day exploring the idea of a Gurmukh, one who is the face of the Guru.
The following day started with deep listening...we heard the sound of our soul's message to us and went into prayer (Ardas).
Sardarni GuruAmrit Kaur, the Siri Sikdar Sahiba, gave us a preview of the Level Two Course: Meditation (Dhyaan), Simran (Vibrational Remembrance) and Veechaar (Contemplation). We explored these states of consciousness knowing we will go into more depth with them at our Level Two Course next summer.
On the third day, Prabhu Nam Kaur provided us a space to experience the Shabd Guru from its many facets by taking us through the Steps of Exaltation (Gur, Guru, SatGuru, SiriGuru & WaheGuru). She played a series of shabads to generate a vibration of Naad. All joined in chanting and building that frequency. She took great care in helping us
practice our pronunciation and explained the meaning of each word that we sang, enabling us to connect even further.
As a last step, we heard the lecture of the Siri Singh Sahib which explained that the Greatest Meditation is to go to the Guru, with full intention and devotion to bow at the Guru's feet. Snatam Kaur led us through a shabad: "Darashan Maago Dayh(i) Piaaray" (I beg for your Vision, Oh Beloved, please give it to me." With our love, we sang this shabad for a couple hours, went before the Guru, said a prayer and received the following hukam, from page 183 of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib:
Gauree Gwaarayree, Fifth Mehla: By the Blessed Vision of the True Guru's Darshan, the fire of desire is quenched. Meeting the True Guru, egotism is subdued. In the Company of the True Guru, the mind does not waver. The Gurmukh speaks the Ambrosial Word of Gurbani. ||1|| He sees the True One pervading the whole world; he is imbued with the True One. I have become cool and tranquil, knowing God, through the Guru. ||1||Pause|| By the Grace of the Saints, one chants the Lord's Name. By the Grace of the Saints, one sings the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises. By the Grace of the Saints, all pains are erased. By the Grace of the Saints, one is released from bondage. ||2|| By the kind Mercy of the Saints, emotional attachment and doubt are removed. Taking a bath in the dust of the feet of the Holy - this is true Dharmic faith. By the kindness of the Holy, the Lord of the Universe becomes merciful. The life of my soul is with the Holy. ||3|| Meditating on the Merciful Lord, the Treasure of Mercy, I have obtained a seat in the Saadh Sangat. I am worthless, but God has been kind to me. In the Saadh Sangat, Nanak has taken to the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||22||91||
